Heroes of Pan

Winston "Spree" Simon

Winston "Spree" Simon is credited with inventing the Steel Pan. The story goes like this:

"Spree" was in his front garden, his metal bin had a dent in it - some youths had thrown a brick at it. Picking it up, he absent mindedly tapped the dent, and then the rest of the bin. It created two different sounds. Being of a musical persuasion, he thought this interesting, and deliberately put more dents in his dustbin until he could play "Mary had a little lamb". He went into the street playing his new instrument. As it was carnival time people followed him down the road, dancing and singing.

Spree was part of the TASPO band that came to London in 1951. Here is a recording of them.
